How to Get Smart Statistics from Hundreds of Apps

Segment is a Web platform for analytics and collection of data on user behavior. Segment is based on one API, which brings hundreds of apps together.

Direct integrations with an analytical service usually require advanced code snippets, which must be implemented to a website. The advantage of Segment is that it allows integrate 100 different analytical services without embedding codes. Segment offers a single API that works with all providers.

You need Segment if you want to:

  1. Use multiple event-driving tools: Mixpanel, Amplitude.
  2. Deploy multiple pixels, and you don’t use GTM: AdWords, Twitter.
  3. Store event data: RedShift, BigQuery.
  4. Get notifications about new clicks: Slack.

Getting Started with Segment and Short.cm

Segment has two concepts – sources and destinations. Source is an application showing where data is coming from. It can be a website, iOS, or Android app. Destination is an appliation where you want to send data to, perhaps a tool like Mixpanel, Amplitude, or somewhere else.

Sources pull data into Segment, so we’ll look at how to collect data from a website, presenting Short.cm as an example. The customization is based on the Segment API key, which you need to add to your Short.cm account.

Once you have collected the data, you need to send it somewhere. Segment lets you send data to all kinds of tools, including Mixpanel, BigQuery, and more than 100 others. That is what makes Segment famous.

To customize a destination, you’ll be asked for an API key, a Token, or to open access to some data.

Short.cm sends data about clicks on the short links to a destination through Segment. As a result, you’ll get the advanced statistical data.

How to customize Short.cm and Segment

Let’s take Mixpanel as an example of a destination. Segment collects data from Short.cm and sends it to Mixpanel.
